Improving the Recruiting Process

The Problem

A government-owned research university was struggling with unclear HR deliverables and performance. The recruiting process for new academic and staff support was arduous, time-consuming, and didn’t yield results.

The Solution

The university commissioned The RBL Group to conduct an HR effectiveness and capability audit, involving both HR employees and internal university clients. The analysis and conclusions were reviewed with the entire HR team and priorities were established. The initial priority recommendation was to redesign the recruiting and onboarding processes. A design team was selected to document current state processes and key issues and gaps, and internal clients reviewed and validated the process. A new process was redesigned collaboratively with clients to met their expectations and leverage HR capabilities.

The Outcome

The university’s new recruiting and onboarding design reduced the overall timeline from 9+ months to 2 months from recruitment to onboarding without staffing increase. Needed IT system application improvements were identified and designed. Both HR and IT agreed to dedicate a permanent technology resource in support of IT. Additionally, the university initiated a capability development plan to upgrade the skills of their staff.
